Authors:

Anna Tivy, Professor of Math, California State University Channel Islands

From complex compositions to the simplest building blocks of music, we see math dictating how music is played, composed and heard. We will explore how math is used to create sound waves, and how by changing the equations of the sound waves, we can influence the music’s sound. We will demonstrate how math plays a role in music by analyzing sounds from a variety of musical instruments.
